Character Name: Merlin
Series: Merlin
Gender: Male
Age & Canon Point: 20, from after the end of Season Two.
Requested Sponsor: Topaz
Entry position: Cadet
History: Biography @ Merlin.wikia
Abilities & Physical Abnormalities: Merlin was born able to use magic instinctively, and he has since learned how to use incantations (although it's unclear just how necessary incantations are). He can pick up new spells very quickly, is highly resistant to magical attacks, and can sense when magic is being used. Whenever he uses magic, his eyes will change to a gold colour. He is also a Dragonlord and able to command dragons.
As for what he can use his magic to do, in canon we've seen examples of:
- telekinesis
- slowing down time
- manipulating the elements (earth, air, fire, and water)
- bringing statues and paintings to life
- unlocking things
- enchanting things
- making people fall asleep
- healing
- hearing magical telepathic communications
- breaking things, conjuring small objects
- calling up thunderstorms to blast people with lightning
For the really long and rambly description of Merlin's abilities, see here.
Personality: Initial impressions of Merlin can be somewhere along the lines of "naive" or "an idiot". Getting to know Merlin better will reveal that there is more to Merlin than this. It's not that Merlin is unintelligent - he is in fact rather intelligent - it's just that he's outspoken, foolish, and has an recurring tendency to not consider the consequences fully before he acts. Really, it's amazing that no one's ever managed to notice one of the many times when Merlin has been using magic in public, during his chores, in the same room as the King...let's just say that if people (*ahem* Arthur) didn't think Merlin was too incompetent to be a Sorcerer, he'd be in serious trouble by now.
Merlin's still rather naive, but not as much as he was when he first arrived at Camelot - a lot of his blunders were the result of just not being familiar with Camelot's customs, and as he found his footing he's lost some of that naivety.
He's also been known to do stupid things like talking back to people in authority. In fact, given the chance Marlin will talk back and snark at just about anybody. This isn't to say that Merlin can't reign in this impulse - he reigns it in considerably with Uther - but if people (*ahem* Arthur) allow it, Merlin will continue to snark and complain and generally overstep boundaries he really shouldn't be crossing when he's just a servant forever.
Merlin's generally a cheerful and friendly fellow, who gets along well with the other servants. But, Merlin isn't all happy and outgoing all the time. He can get depressed and start moping and sulking all over the place - particularly when he's feeling upset about the fact that he has to hide his magic. Merlin desperately wants acceptance, but he also knows that his magic would never get acceptance at King Uther's court, and this makes him feel somewhat stifled and trapped.
And despite what Arthur would say, Merlin isn't just a walking textbook example of stupidity. He might be naive and foolish, but he has a strong sense of fairness, justice, and right and wrong. Merlin often works hard to rectify cases of injustice, even when it's actually outside his means. He's brave, but not in the sense that nothing terrifies him - rather, he'll put himself in danger to protect others. Merlin is also intensely loyal - if you are a friend, he will bend over backwards to help you, even if he gets hurt himself by it. (And if you're Arthur, he'd do pretty much anything for you).
As a result of this loyalty, Merlin's darker side often comes to light. To put it bluntly, if you hurt or threaten his friends, he will not hesitate to kill you. He's killed a number of people since coming to Camelot, and hasn't shown any regret or remorse about killing any of them. Cross Merlin, and you could find yourself in deep trouble. Cross Arthur, and you're pretty much doomed. Merlin has also shown himself capable of making very dark decisions - in a case of choosing between the lesser of two evils, Merlin will choose the lesser evil, even if it means he personally has to carry out an evil act. This wasn't always the case - he wasn't able to let Mordred die when he found out Mordred would one day kill Arthur. But later on, he was capable of poisoning Morgana in order to break the spell that kept Camelot asleep, and to blackmail Morgause into ceasing her attack - though this is an action that pained him greatly.
What are your plans for the character in-game? I'd like to play around with Merlin dealing with the various attitudes to magic he's going to encounter, and how his own magic factors into that. He's used to having to hide his magic or risk execution, so I think it will be interesting to play around with the fact that he'll have to hide it from the natives, but others in the Garden will accept it.
Anything else? No.

Complete TWO out of the FOUR options.
i) IC Questionnaire (can be found on the application page)
(As this questionnaire is entirely IC, your character is free to lie.)
What do you prefer to be known as? Merlin.
How old are you? I'm twenty.
Do you have any history in combat? Me? Oh I'm hopeless with a sword. Usually whenever there's a battle I just stand around and try to hide.
If so, have you ever killed? Didn't I just say that I'm hopeless with a sword?
i) How do you feel when you get involved in some project that calls for immediate and rapid activity? [snorting] Arthur thinks everything requires immediate and rapid activity. You know it'd be nice to actually get a break once in a while. Because despite what some crown princes might think, it won't hurt if the laundry waits an hour. Or two.
ii) Do you organize and initiate leisure activities? Well, in-between working for Arthur, helping Gaius, dealing with...things...I never even get any time for leisure activities! You'd think that having a day off every once it a while wouldn't be too much to ask, would you?
iii) What role do you take when working in a group? Do you mean my job? I'm a servant, I work for the crown prince.
iv) How talkative are you around other people? Oh I'm really talkative. In fact Arthur usually complains that I talk too much.
v) What three things would you want to have with you on a desert island? State your reasoning. Why am I on an island? And isn't the answer obvious? I'd want a boat, with enough food and water to get back to the mainland, and some oars.
vi) Is it important to be liked by a wide range of people? Yes. As long as they're all good people.
vii) When the odds are against you, is it worth taking a chance? Yes. If it's important enough, it's always worth taking a chance.
viii) Do you consider yourself to be an impulsive person? Not really? Although sometimes I do things on impulse. Once in a while. (You haven't been talking to Gaius, have you?)
ix) Would you agree that planning things ahead takes the fun out of life? Well since I think not planning things usually ends up with everything going disastrously wrong...not really, no.
x) Do you like surprises? Is it a surprise from Arthur? Because I don't like those surprises. They usually involve cleaning.
xi) Do you sometimes wonder if there is something wrong with you? [pause] Well if you listen to Arthur I have a grave mental disease, but he's a prat so you shouldn't listen to him.
xii) Do you consider yourself to be smarter than your superiors, and disagree with their decisions? Oh I'm definitely smarter than Arthur. He'd probably be lost without me!
xiii) Lastly, how do you feel about cabbages? You want to know about...cabbages. [looking at you like you might just be a little crazy] They're alright?
